I live in a neighbourhood where there are 19 Houses in Multiple Occupation (HMOs), with another one soon to be added, all within a five-minute walk of my street. The rapid increase of HMOs is transforming the character of our community and not for the better. Anti-social behaviour has become an unfortunate norm due to these establishments, causing distress and discomfort among residents.

The only individuals profiting from this situation are landlords who own these properties. Meanwhile, Newport is quickly becoming known as the 'HMO Capital' of Wales - a title that does not reflect well on our city's reputation.

According to research conducted by Shelter Cymru, there has been a significant rise in complaints related to anti-social behaviour linked with HMOs across Wales over recent years. This trend is clearly evident within Newport and needs addressing urgently.

We call upon the Newport City Council to oppose any further planning for HMO's in our city. We believe it's time that the council prioritises its residents' wellbeing over landlord profits.
