The Issue

I know what it feels like to lack a safe space to call home. Having experienced homelessness, I understand the profound need for secure, stable housing. Unfortunately, the derelict homes at 1-23 Bow Street in Maryland, E15 are a heartbreaking sight, standing as a stark reminder of wasted potential amidst a severe housing crisis. These properties, which should be providing shelter for people in need, have instead become hubs for antisocial behaviour, disrupting the peace in our community.

Newham residents, like myself, are fed up with witnessing valuable housing resources being squandered. At a time when social housing demand is at an all-time high, allowing these homes to rot is not just irresponsible but unacceptable. According to Shelter UK, the average waiting time for social housing in London can extend up to a decade. Renovating and repurposing these properties would not only provide immediate relief to people waiting for a home but also foster a more secure and inviting neighbourhood.

As a community, we have seen the negative impact of neglect. Rising crime rates, anti social behaviour  and fly tipping are just some of the repercussions that unnecessarily burden our area. By revamping these properties, Newham Council could effectively tackle these issues while enhancing the quality of life for both current and future residents. A proactive approach to this crisis demonstrates a commitment to community welfare and sustainable development.

We call on the council to take immediate action to. :

 1. Start Renovations

In July 2025 Newham Council agreed to the allocation of up to £1,140,000 from the Council’s HRA Capital Programme for the refurbishment of the property. We demand a date in the near future for works to begin. .

2. Secure the site:

Install robust, secure fencing around the site to prevent unauthorised access to the gardens and building, or hand the site over to a company for temporary guardianship.

We need your support to turn this vision into reality. By signing this petition, you join the call for Newham Council to take immediate steps to renovate 1-23 Bow Street and reintegrate these properties as safe and affordable housing. Let’s reclaim these homes for those who need them most and restore pride in our community.
