As the legislator representing the constituency of Rockaway Parkway, I have first-hand insights into the growing danger caused by unsafe driving patterns near Wheeler Avenue School. Our children and teachers are frequently exposed to risky situations due to speeding cars, double parking, and various other forms of unsafe conduct during the busy arrival and dismissal times. This is an urgent matter that needs immediate attention.

We believe an extensive traffic study conducted by the Nassau County Department of Public Works involving median installation or other safety measures can make the road safer for everyone in our community, especially our young ones. In the US, close to 100 children are killed yearly while going to and from school and about 25,000 are injured (source: National Safety Council). Our community should not risk becoming part of this grim statistic.

We seek a swift, prompt and comprehensive response, because the lives of our children, their teachers, parents, and all those who use Rockaway Parkway are invaluable. We can't wait for tragedy to spur action when preventative measures are within reach.
