The Issue

Growing up, my childhood was intertwined with the sprawling fields of my grandparents' farm. This land was more than just a piece of property; it was a cornerstone of our family’s heritage and livelihood. The day my grandparents were compelled to sell it was the day I understood that farmland loss isn't merely a rural issue—it is a community issue that affects all of us, including college students who rely on a steady supply of affordable, nutritious food.

Farmland loss poses a significant threat to our communities in Minnesota's 3rd, 5th, 6th, and 7th congressional districts. As urban development encroaches on rural landscapes, we lose not only irreplaceable agricultural heritage but also the capacity to sustain our local food systems. According to the American Farmland Trust, the United States loses 175 acres of farmland every hour to urban sprawl and development. Minnesota is not immune to these statistics, and without concrete legislative action, we risk the permanent depletion of our agricultural resources.

I have outlined potential solutions in my environmental policy paper, which proposes practical farmland preservation policies aimed at safeguarding these vital lands. These policies recommend the implementation of agricultural easements and zoning adjustments that prioritize agricultural use, tax incentives for farmers, and community-supported agriculture initiatives. By endorsing these proposals, our lawmakers can take decisive steps towards ensuring the sustainability and resilience of our local food networks.

Protections such as these have been established in other states, including Maryland and Pennsylvania, and have seen a multitude of successes. Proving that it is possible if there is enough push.

It's imperative that we act swiftly to preserve our farmland for future generations. The lawmakers representing Minnesota's 3rd, 5th, 6th, and 7th congressional districts have the power to introduce and champion this vital legislation. By doing so, they can protect not just rural areas, but the very fabric of our communities, and ensure food security and economic stability.

Please join me in calling on our lawmakers to take action, endorse these farmland preservation policies, and safeguard our community's future. Sign this petition and let's work together to keep Minnesota's agricultural heritage alive for generations to come.
