My name is Branden, and I have lived with Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) Type 1C since being diagnosed at one year old. SMA is a devastating, progressive disease that robs individuals of their ability to move, breathe, and live freely. Without treatment, individuals with SMA often face shortened lives, with dreams left unfulfilled and their potential cut short. Tragically, many have passed away before they could receive the treatment that could have changed their lives. Four years ago, hope came into my life through a groundbreaking treatment that halted the progression of my condition. This therapy has enabled me to speak more clearly, enjoy online games longer, and even control the TV remote—milestones that would have been unimaginable before.

However, my progress is now at risk. The cost of this medication is overwhelming, and many families, like mine, are being forced to choose between life-saving treatments and basic necessities—an impossible and heartbreaking decision. This financial burden puts our lives on hold, threatening to undo the progress we’ve made. It is estimated that one child with SMA is born every week in Malaysia, and we must not delay action. Our country is falling behind others where government support is already funding these treatments, giving their citizens a better chance at life and independence.

We urgently need our government to step in and fund these life-changing therapies. SMA treatments offer hope and a chance at a better quality of life, but the extremely high costs place them out of reach for many. No one should have to face this battle alone or be denied access to such vital care due to financial barriers.
