The issue

I am a passionate supporter of the Windows Mixed Reality (WMR) VR platform, having been an active member of this community for the last three years. The recent announcement that Microsoft is planning to remove WMR functionality in the upcoming Windows 11 24H2 update has left me and many others deeply concerned about the future of our beloved platform.

The WMR VR platform has provided a unique space for innovation and competition in the virtual reality industry. Its potential discontinuation threatens not only to reduce diversity in this burgeoning field but also risks rendering a significant amount of hardware obsolete. This could lead to unnecessary electronic waste, contributing further to our already pressing environmental issues.

Making WMR open source would allow dedicated developers within our community and beyond to continue improving upon it, keeping alive a valuable resource for virtual reality enthusiasts worldwide. Moreover, it would prevent unnecessary hardware scrapping and mitigate associated environmental costs.

We urge Microsoft Corporation to reconsider their decision regarding WMR's future. By making it open source, they can ensure its legacy continues while demonstrating commitment towards reducing electronic waste.

Microsoft shouldn't have to continue to invest in a platform they consider dead, but making it so that people are unable to use something that they paid for that is unacceptable. Windows Mixed Reality (WMR) Headsets are still functional and can be used for a plethora of Virtual Reality experiences. Forcing a product into a non-functional state when...

I’m a VR user. And this change in windows mixed reality has turned my hardware into a brick. It is ridiculous that Microsoft has made this change without any sort of fallback or option to be able to continue to use my headset. Something should be done about this as many many people have VR hardware that can only run beside WMR

The latest February 2025 Windows update makes Windows Mixed Reality unable to even install. Forget about Microsoft's promise to keep it viable until 2026, they locked it up at the start of 2025 in a Windows 10 update. I now have a perfectly fine Dell Visor VR headset that was working perfectly until the update that my son spent several hundred do...
