New York City Speaker Julie Menin, who has been a vocal leader on this issue, sent the below letter to the 9,000+ users who signed Anne-Marie's petition calling for Mayor Mamdani to release the 9/11 documents. The letter is pasted below! - The Change.org Team
Dear Friends:
First and foremost, I would like to thank the nearly 9,000 people who have signed Anne
Marie Principe’s Change.org petition calling on the City to release all public health
documents relating to September 11, 2001.
As someone who lived and worked blocks away from the World Trade Center in 2001,
who continues to serve on the 9/11 Memorial Board, this issue is deeply personal to me,
and I am truly grateful for your advocacy.
Like tens of thousands of New Yorkers, I was told it was safe to return to Lower
Manhattan within weeks of the terrorist attacks on 9/11, even though it was not.
Last month, I joined survivor advocates and labor leaders on the steps of City Hall in
demanding that the City disclose all records related to toxins in and around Ground
Zero after a newly uncovered internal memo indicated officials anticipated lawsuits tied
to health advisories issued in the weeks following the attacks.
As I said during that press conference, it is shameful that the City hid this information
and refused to disclose it. It is also unconscionable that it did not take responsibility for
basically lying to not only first responders, but to the whole downtown community.
This is why I called on the NYC Law Department to take a hard look at releasing the 9/11
air quality and health risk files so that the public — particularly first responders and
survivors of the tragedy — can finally have access to the truth.
On March 16, we secured a commitment from the City’s Chief Legal Officer that the Law
Department will create a public portal so all New Yorkers can access these vital
documents, which you can read more about here.
Transparency is critical not only for accountability, but for the thousands of people still
living with 9/11-related illnesses, and we will continue to advocate for the portal to go
live as soon as possible. The truth cannot wait any longer.
Thank you again to everyone who signed Ms. Principe’s petition and who have joined us
in demanding answers to what the City really knew.
Sincerely,
JULIE MENIN
Speaker
