The issue

For over three years, the residents of East Fremantle have been deprived of valuable green space meant to be a park for public enjoyment. This park is a necessity for our community's well-being. As a pet owner, finding safe and accessible areas to exercise dogs is a constant challenge. This fenced-off land, tainted with asbestos, poses a health risk that should not exist in a community-conscious society like ours.

The area remains inaccessible due to the contamination of hazardous asbestos. Exposure to asbestos fibers is well-documented in causing serious illnesses, including lung cancer, mesothelioma, and asbestosis. According to the Asbestos Safety and Eradication Agency, even minimal exposure can have dire consequences for health. This is a grave concern for families who would like to utilize the space for recreation, children who seek a safe place to play, and the broader community that values green open spaces.

Moreover, it is paramount to consider the environmental and social benefits that green spaces bring to urban areas. Parks foster community interaction, promote healthy lifestyles, and improve the overall quality of life. In light of urban development, the need for green spaces has never been more critical. The substantial delay in addressing this environmental hazard demonstrates neglect and diminishes East Fremantle's potential to provide its residents with a vibrant living environment.

We urge the Western Australian Department of Main Roads to prioritise the removal and safe disposal of asbestos from this parkland. By doing so, they will restore the land for its purpose: a park where families, individuals, and pets can gather and enjoy nature without fear. Expediting this clean-up process not only aligns with public health priorities but is also a testament to the commitment to preserving public spaces for future generations.

Please help us make our community safer and healthier by calling on the department to act. Sign this petition to demand action and give East Fremantle the safe, green park it deserves.
