The Issue

The fashion industry has been a significant part of modern society, offering creativity and expression through clothing. However, behind the glamour and allure of fashion lies a cruel reality for countless animals. Brands like Eileen Fisher, Stay Golden, and Urban Outfitters have been selling products made from angora, cashmere, leather, fur, and other animal-derived materials. This practice not only raises ethical concerns but also poses a threat to our environment.

Animals used in the fashion industry suffer immensely. For example, the process of obtaining angora wool involves plucking fur from rabbits, often causing them great distress and pain, particularly cruel is angora from China where animal welfare laws barely exist and the fur is pulled off of screaming rabbits.   Cashmere production, primarily from goats, involves harsh conditions, overgrazing, and requires substantial water resources, which contributes to environmental degradation. Leather production involves the slaughter of animals and includes toxic tanning processes that harm both workers and surrounding ecosystems. The fur industry is notorious for raising animals in small cages and subjects them to inhumane conditions, before being killed for their pelts.

The environmental impact of using animal products in fashion is devastating. The United Nations has identified the fashion industry as a key contributor to environmental threats, pointing out that it accounts for about 10% of global carbon emissions and 20% of wastewater globally. The production of animal-based fibers tends to be more water-intensive and results in higher emissions compared to plant-based alternatives.

There is a growing availability of cruelty-free and sustainable fashion alternatives. Brands have successfully adopted plant-based materials, such as organic cotton, hemp, and innovative vegan leather made from mushroom and pineapple fibers. These not only mitigate animal cruelty but also offer sustainable solutions that reduce environmental impact.

We urge Eileen Fisher, Stay Golden, and Urban Outfitters to show compassion and responsibility by phasing out the use of angora, cashmere, leather, fur, and all animal products in their collections. As leaders in the fashion industry, they have the power to set ethical standards and inspire change within the industry.

Sign this petition to call upon these brands to commit to a cruelty-free and sustainable future in fashion, protecting animals and safeguarding our planet for generations to come. Your signature can make a pivotal difference in this movement towards ethical fashion.
