Urge King Charles III to acknowledge Monarchy’s role in Colonial Slavery & Trafficking
The Issue
I am the descendant of enslaved Grenadian people whose stolen lives and unpaid labour, during the period of chattel slavery in the British Empire, furnished the British State and the Monarchy with immense riches. Recently, archival evidence has surfaced, revealing that King George IV profited personally in 1823 from enslaved Grenadian people on two Crown-owned estates on the island: https://www.reuters.com/world/uk/new-research-adds-pressure-british-monarchy-over-historical-ties-slavery-2025-08-07/
Given this revelation, I strongly believe that it is of utmost importance, more than ever, that King Charles III publicly acknowledge this dark chapter of history which directly implicates the Monarchy. We now know that a British King personally profited from what the UN has called “the greatest crime against humanity” committed in the modern era.
For generations, the people of Grenada and the wider Caribbean have lived with the legacy of colonial slavery, a system that facilitated immense wealth for the British Empire at the cost of untold suffering. It was, let it be clear, a system that was resisted at all points and in myriad ways by the enslaved. The Monarchy, as a symbol of this imperial past, has a moral responsibility to recognise its role in these injustices and begin the process of healing and reconciliation.
A public acknowledgment from King Charles III would serve as a significant gesture towards atoning for the wrongs inflicted during colonial rule. It is not merely a formality; it is an essential step in recognising the enduring impact of this dark history on Caribbean societies today. Acknowledgment is crucial for fostering understanding, promoting dialogue, and ensuring that such inhumanities are never repeated.
With your support, we can urge the British Monarchy to confront its past and lead the way towards a more just and equitable future (my open letter to King Charles III can be read on my website: https://desireebaptiste.com/f/open-letter-to-king-charles-iii-17th-october-2025
