The Issue

As an Irish person and someone who has been deeply affected by the painful legacy of colonisation, I find it increasingly impossible to ignore the plight of the Palestinian people. Their struggle echoes the history of Ireland, where countless generations fought for sovereignty and self-determination against colonial forces. It's a narrative we know all too well, and it's time for Ireland to take a firm stand on the international stage to support those who face similar injustices today.

The actions of the Israeli government in Palestine have been widely condemned by human rights organizations across the globe. Reports from Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, and the United Nations have pointed to ongoing violations that have serious humanitarian consequences. Given these realities, the Irish government must not merely pay lip service to the ideals of justice and freedom—we must actively reflect these values in our financial and diplomatic dealings.

There is a precedent for this kind of action. In 1984, Ireland became the first country in the world to ban the import of South African goods in protest against apartheid. This was not merely a symbolic act; it played a significant role in the global movement that pressured South Africa to dismantle its racially oppressive system. Similarly, cutting financial ties with Israel would demonstrate Ireland’s commitment to human rights and give real weight to our national position on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

The economic relationship between Ireland and Israel is not insignificant. By ending our financial interactions, Ireland can set a powerful example for other nations to follow. We can prove that our international policies are more than just rhetoric—they are commitments to a future where all people can live in peace and dignity.

I call upon the Irish government to take immediate and decisive action by ending all financial ties with Israel. We owe it to ourselves, to our history, and, most importantly, to the people of Palestine, who are enduring in the face of unimaginable adversity.

By signing this petition, you are joining a movement to hold Ireland accountable to its proud tradition of standing up for human rights and ensuring that our actions are aligned with our words. Let us show that the people of Ireland stand with Palestinians in their fight for justice and equality. Sign this petition to urge the Irish government to act now.
