For five long years, my disabled son endured unimaginable abuse, neglect, and serious harm at a care home, reaching a point where he nearly lost his life in June 2025. This isn't just our heart-wrenching story but, unfortunately, a reality for many vulnerable residents and patients across the UK. Our loved ones deserve to live safely and with dignity in care homes and hospital wards. It is imperative that we take immediate and decisive action to protect the defenseless and ensure their well-being.

Installing CCTV and recording devices in all care homes, residential homes, and hospital wards can offer a much-needed layer of protection for the most vulnerable. It would serve not only as a preventive measure against emotional and physical harm but also as a potent deterrent to those who might contemplate abusing their positions. Such surveillance can also provide critical evidence in the unfortunate event of abuse or neglect, ensuring accountability is upheld and perpetrators are brought to justice.

CCTV and recording devices are now used effectively in many public places to maintain safety and security, and there is no reason why such technology shouldn’t be extended to care facilities. According to recent reports, instances of neglect and abuse in care settings are disturbingly high, and urgent measures are required to reverse this trend. The NHS has reported rising cases of abuse in care settings, and local authorities have been overwhelmed with complaints. Comprehensive surveillance would not only protect the residents but also safeguard the reputation of well-intentioned caregivers from unfounded accusations.

While privacy concerns are understandable, these can be carefully managed through clear regulations ensuring footage is only accessed under necessary circumstances. Families have the right to demand justice and safety for their loved ones, and installation of such systems can only enhance their peace of mind, knowing their loved ones are safe.

We are calling upon the UK Government to implement policy changes that mandate the installation of CCTV and recording devices in all care and residential homes as well as hospital wards throughout the country. Protect the dignity and lives of our vulnerable citizens by supporting this cause.
