Urge IAGD leadership to uninvite politicians who have not called for a permanent ceasefire

The Issue

The Islamic Association of Greater Detroit (IAGD) is a respected institution that plays an integral role in our community. Its actions and decisions have far-reaching implications, not only locally but also internationally. With its upcoming inauguration ceremony on March 2, 2024, it has the opportunity to make a powerful statement about peace and justice.

We are deeply concerned that IAGD has extended invitations to politicians who have not publicly advocated for a permanent and unconditional ceasefire in Gaza. This is particularly troubling given the ongoing conflicts in this region, which have resulted in countless civilian casualties,  including women and children, and widespread displacement.

By inviting politicians who do not actively support peace efforts, IAGD risks endorsing their silence on this critical issue. We believe this contradicts IAGD's mission "to provide services that help Muslims carry out their religious duties and activities, educate them about their rights and responsibilities."

Therefore, we urge IAGD leadership to rescind its invitation, for its inauguration ceremony, from any congressional member or candidate who has not publicly called for a permanent and unconditional ceasefire in Gaza. Furthermore, we want the board to inform the community when those invitations have been rescinded.

Our objective is to maintain harmony in the community and avoid any disruption during the event.
