Urge Halesowen College to revise LSF distribution changes
The Issue
My name is liam, and I am currently a student at Halesowen College, directly impacted by recent changes to the Learning Support Fund (LSF) distribution policy. This issue is not just mine, it affects numerous students who depend on this crucial financial support to meet their most basic needs while pursuing education.
Recently, the college decided to alter how the LSF is distributed, shifting from a weekly sum to a daily allocation of just £5. While seemingly minor, this change has significant and damaging consequences for students like me who are already disadvantaged financially. The current daily budget makes it incredibly difficult for us to access nutritious meals, as food costs at college are not aligned with what £5 a day can reasonably cover. As a result, many of us are forced to make difficult choices between our studies and our sustenance.
Studies show that proper nutrition is vital for concentration and academic performance. For students already struggling with financial hardship, which includes those supported by the LSF, this change is a barrier to achieving educational success. A survey of our peers has shown that a majority find this adjustment unjust and unsustainable, pushing many towards additional financial strain and stress.
Moreover, it's important to note that the LSF was initially designed to aid the most economically challenged students. By allocating funds on a daily basis rather than weekly, the flexibility and autonomy that allow students to manage their finances effectively have been taken away. This decision feels not only limiting but discriminatory as it disproportionately affects those who rely on this support the most.
We believe that the college administration has not fully considered these real-life implications. Thus, we respectfully urge Halesowen College to review and revert to the previous weekly LSF distribution system which allows students the liberty to manage their budgets effectively, ensuring they have access to necessities without undue stress.
Please support this cause by signing our petition. Together, we can advocate for a fairer funding distribution system that considers the wellbeing and academic success of all students. Your signature will help send a powerful message to the college leadership to rethink this decision and better support those who need it most.
