The Issue

On November 19th 2019, Google launched Stadia, a cloud-gaming service that aimed to compete with consoles and other cloud-based platforms. It offered users a way to play a variety of intensive games without the barriers of entry such as expensive hardware or intimidating PC rigs, and Stadia could be played on virtually on any device its users owned, from their phones, to laptops, tablets, and even smart TVs! Google's servers handled the processing power in the backend by streaming games from the cloud to the player. That meant no high-end computers or consoles were necessary to use Stadia, and players did not have to worry about the inconvenience of downloading, installing, or updating their games either. It was a simple pick-up-and-play model, and users were free to play wherever and whenever they choose as long as they had a solid network connection and a compatible device. The platform had the benefit of building an ecosystem, along with support from various publishers/developers, a unique storefront, peripherals, and Google's backing to build a solid infrastructure, spearheading cloud gaming's foray to prominence during the turn of the new decade.

Despite a rocky launch in November of 2019, in its short time, Stadia became a technically impressive streaming platform that its most avid supporters lauded. The Stadia Team managed to smooth out the rough edges from its debut overtime and slowly build its library and features. This gave Stadia leverage in being able to perform well against the competition, and its dedicated user base recognized its strengths as a result. While the team worked hard to improve the service and respond to feedback, in its almost three-year run the platform managed to accomplish the following:

  • Added over 200+ titles over it's lifetime, with both AAA and indie titles alike.
  • Garnered third-party support from the likes of Square Enix, Ubisoft, EA, Bandai Namco, Activision, Capcom, and more. (A feat companies like Nintendo struggled with in the past, and only recently managed to do with the Switch).
  • Launched with Stadia Pro, an OPTIONAL subscription service that offered substantial benefits, though it was not required to use Stadia (i.e. discounts on games, free monthly titles which users could claim and still play after they left Pro, streaming games in 4K, ETC.)
  • Introduced Stadia Base in 2020, a free tier which allowed users to purchase and play the games they want without a subscription.
  • Offered cross-play on certain titles; multiplayer present on over 100+ titles with online play at NO ADDITIONAL COST, unlike PlayStation Plus or Nintendo Switch Online, which were paid and were required to use online play on their consoles.
  • Received quality ports that ran as good, if not better, than their console counterparts (titles like Destiny 2, Red Dead Redemption 2, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, Mortal Kombat 11, NBA 2K21, Octopath Traveler, and Cyberpunk: 2077 come to mind).
  • Released a feature that allowed new and existing users to test out games via timed trials before considering purchase on the Stadia Store
  • Released State Share, a feature which allowed users to snapshot specific moments in-game and allowed other players to jump in in the HITMAN: World of Assassination series of games
  • Released additional content and exclusive features for ports of games like Final Fantasy XV, Destiny 2, etc.
  • Added support for achievements, apps on iOS and other devices, and introduced a UI overhaul, addressing previous complaints from users and improving the UX overall
  • Opened a subreddit (r/Stadia) and community forums on the Stadia website to directly engage with its users, deliver news and updates, and receive and respond to critical feedback.
  • And much more..

Despite these small victories, however, and the Stadia Team's reassurance to commitment of the platform, Google believed that the service was eventually not viable and began to shutter Stadia on September 22nd, 2022. It was eventually shut it down on January 18th, 2023.

Google attributes its personal failure of Stadia on its "inability to gain traction", despite launching the platform only 3 years from launch at the time. Additionally, the misconceptions and initial skepticism by the media, in addition to Google's poor marketing (or lack thereof) and business decisions, led to its downfall. This is not to suggest that Stadia was doomed from the start though. For all the bad press the service receive, there was nothing to suggest it couldn't go anywhere but up from there. But Google believed the damage had been done, and a potentially great service with revolutionary technology had made its way into the annals of Killed By Google all because the company was afraid to commit long term and see it through.

That is why I am writing this petition to urge the heads at Google to reverse this decision and reconsider their approach to make Stadia the one place for all the ways we play again. Many Stadia fans believed, and still believe, in the platform's vision; we don't need something with so much potential ending up as the butt of another joke or in the Google Graveyard with all the other supposed "failures".

Objective(s) for this petition are:

  • To educate the public on Stadia's ambitions and how the platform paved the way for cloud gaming today by serving as an archive to all the service's features and content
  • Convince Google to adopt new strategies to better market and invest in Stadia's future should they choose to bring it back
  • Suggest new features and quality of life improvements to better Stadia as a platform and a service
  • Address issues people had with Stadia's launch, it's overall image, and Google's lack of transparency towards what the service offered
  • See that Google takes the necessary steps to ensure Stadia has a future and a place in the gaming market; to commit to its longevity and ultimately have the consumers' interest at heart

Sign and share this petition to show Google that Stadia deserves a second chance, and to correct the mistakes they made in the past to capitalize on the service's positives and persuade its initial critics. Feel free to start any hashtags to help promote the petition as well!

The ultimate goal is to get Google's attention, but considering they are a large corporation with many different departments, we need to make a big enough boom. We need to show them that if they allocate their resources properly, understand the target audience, and execute appropriate marketing, Stadia can thrive once again and stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the likes of current-gen consoles and other streaming platforms like Luna, Shadow, Boosteroid, xCloud, and even GeForce Now. Possibly even more so! Until then, don't convert your Stadia controllers over to Bluetooth mode just yet!

(DISCLAIMER: This petition will be updated with more info, links, and corrections to better explain the concept of Stadia to people both unfamiliar with the service and skeptics alike. This will help to combat any misinformation on Stadia as a platform, offer suggestion to make the platform better and more consumer friendly, and bolster support for the movement, so be on the lookout!)
