The Issue

Google has recently entirely removed the path of ski lifts, ski slopes, and cable cars from Google Maps. We cannot accept it!

As a skiing enthusiast and tourism professional, I passionately believe that ski lifts and cableways are far more than mere hobby gadgets; they serve as vital public transportation. They are the veins connecting the heart of mountainous regions to the outer world, serving both the local people who reside there and the tourism community eager to explore the pristine heights.

Maps are meant to help people navigate and assist those participating in tourism.

People used to choose accommodations, travel destinations, and orient themselves based on the position of cable cars and ski resorts shown on maps.

Imagine a scenario where vital transportation systems such as roads or railways disappeared from Google Maps. That’s the reality for us, the mountain people and skiing enthusiasts. Lifts are our way to reach heights; they make the unapproachable accessible. The removal of ski lifts from Google Maps is more than an inconvenience—it disrupts the daily lives of mountain dwellers and hampers tourism, a significant economic driver in mountainous regions around the globe.

Specifically, in countries like Switzerland and Austria—but also in most mountainous regions globally—this decision impacts local economies and the private lives of communities. Lift infrastructure lies at the heart of local economic prosperity and lifestyle.

Let’s collectively urge Google to recognize the value of mountain transport infrastructure as equivalent to other transportation systems and reinstate it on Google Maps. This is not only a concern for ski lovers and hikers but also for the benefit of local residents and economies.

Let’s convince Google to allow the user community, mountain transport companies, and ski resorts to edit and suggest mountain infrastructure positions and information themselves, ensuring up-to-date data is available to everyone.

Please help us take this uphill struggle forward and encourage Google to do the right thing. Sign our petition today.
