Urge Football Australia to reinstate Heidelberg’s ACL2 spot

Urge Football Australia to reinstate Heidelberg’s ACL2 spot
The issue
As a fervent football follower, the recent decision by Football Australia to revoke Heidelberg United's right to participate in the upcoming Asian Champions League 2 (ACL2) is not just disappointing, but it strikes a blow to the heart of football enthusiasts across the nation. This move has left countless fans bewildered and disheartened, raising questions about the decision-making process that led to such an unexpected and unsettling outcome.
How Heidelberg Got the Spot in the First Place
Heidelberg United made a historic run to the 2025 Australia Cup Final, where they lost to the Newcastle Jets. Because the Newcastle Jets also won the A-League Premiership, they qualified for the top-tier AFC Champions League Elite.
Since Newcastle couldn't take both spots, the Australia Cup's ACL Two slot defaulted. Under Football Australia’s internal guidelines, they passed this continental spot down to the cup runner-up, Heidelberg United.
Heidelberg United has consistently displayed excellence and commitment to the sport, making invaluable contributions to the Australian football scene. Their players have demonstrated exceptional skill and sportsmanship, capturing the passion and imagination of supporters far and wide. Stripping them of the opportunity to compete on such a prestigious international stage not only undermines their hard work and dedication but also diminishes Australia's reputation in football.
This decision seems hasty and not reflective of the club’s efforts and potential. Heidelberg United's involvement in the ACL2 would not only be a significant achievement for the club itself but also for Australian football as a whole. Their participation would promote greater recognition and respect for our national football on an international level.
Football Australia's statement explicitly notes: "Heidelberg United FC satisfied the mandatory criteria set out in the Football Australia's National Club Licensing Regulations." FA’s legal team did their homework regarding domestic licensing (finances, structure, etc.), and Heidelberg sourced an alternate home stadium to meet continental standards.
Keep the Courts Out
Heidelberg United has expressed immense disappointment and has formally requested the appeals process from Football Australia. The club argues that Article 7.4 contains "ambiguity" regarding what happens when a cup winner is unable to fulfill their position. No one wants to see the game end up in the courts... so we urge Football Australia to reconsider.
Reverse its decision and provide Heidelberg United with the chance to showcase their talents and represent Australia in the ACL2. By doing so, we not only support a deserving team but also uphold the values of fairness and opportunity in sports. Let's rally together and stand strong in ensuring that Heidelberg's hard-earned place in the Asian Champions League 2 is rightfully reinstated.
Please sign this petition to show your support for Heidelberg United and urge Football Australia to reconsider their decision. Together, we can make a difference and help keep the spirit of Australian football alive and thriving.
