Urge Facebook to Ban Animal Rescue Porn

The Issue

Animals should be loved and taken care of. Yet, across Facebook, pages exploit vulnerable animals in a trend known as "rescue porn," where animals are often put in harm's way just to create sensational videos that draw in clicks, likes, comments, and followers. These staged videos purport to show acts of compassion, yet they do the opposite, often repeatedly placing the same animals in harmful situations, purely for generating content.

The deceptive practice of rescue porn not only endangers these animals but also spreads misinformation about legitimate rescue efforts, diluting genuine compassion, empathy, and support. Staged rescues undermine real rescues carried out by organizations committed to the welfare of animals. This malicious content masquerades as helpful when, in fact, it perpetuates unnecessary cruelty.

Facebook, as a leading social media platform, has the responsibility to ensure that its users are not misled by these harmful practices. Cracking down on pages that exploit animals for engagement is crucial in upholding ethical standards and protecting defenseless animals from exploitation.

Our aim is to make Facebook take meaningful action by implementing stricter regulations against pages involved in this cruel practice. We urge Facebook to change its community standards to ban these pages, and to collaborate with animal welfare experts to develop tools and strategies to identify and ban content that perpetuates animal cruelty disguised as rescue efforts.

Many times I have tried to report these FAKE ANIMAL RESCUE videos on Facebook for using animal abuse. Facebook leaves the videos up saying it does not violate their community standards.

By signing this petition, you are calling upon Facebook to lead by example, showing that cruelty for the sake of engagement has no place on its platform and choosing to protect innocent animals from manipulative and harmful online content. Please sign the petition and help bring about change for the sake of all animals affected by these videos. Together, we can insist on an ethical social media environment where all content creators are held to core standards of responsibility and compassion.
