Urge Covina & W. Covina Council to Support Feds Mask Ban, Community Education, & Econ Stud

Urge Covina & W. Covina Council to Support Feds Mask Ban, Community Education, & Econ Stud
The Issue
In Covina, CA & W. Covina, CA we face critical community issues that require immediate attention and action. Implementing the Los Angeles Board of Supervisors' Mask Ban, recognizing the economic impact of immigration raids, and establishing continuous community education are essential steps towards fostering a safer, more informed, and economically stable community. We demand the following of the Covina & W. Covina City Council do the following:
1) Adopt: The Los Angeles Board of Supervisors has introduced a mask ban for federal agents to identify themselves and passed the creation of an ordinance on Wednesday, July 30. 60 days after Wednesday, July 30, the LA County Board of Supervisors will establish and vote to adopt the ordinance. The Covina City Council should join Los Angeles and several other cities - Montebello, Culver City, Monterey Park, Pasadena, Pico Rivera, Santa Monica, and West Hollywood - that are also seeking to join the lawsuit brought last week by the American Civil Liberties Union and other immigration and civil rights groups.
The lawsuit alleges that federal agencies, including U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and U.S. Customs and Border Protection, have engaged in unconstitutional and unlawful immigration raids by targeting Angelenos based on their perceived race and ethnicity and also denying detainees constitutionally mandated due process.
2) Immigration raids in Covina and West Covina, including surrounding areas have not only devastated families but severely impacted our local economy. Businesses suffer, jobs are lost, and economic instability rises. Recognizing this impact isn't just about acknowledging a problem; it's about finding and supporting solutions that can help mitigate these effects, supporting both immigrant and non-immigrant residents and businesses alike.
3) Create and establish sustained community education on 'Know Your Rights' is crucial. Many residents are unaware of their legal rights or the resources available to them. Implementing educational programs that provide this knowledge, alongside outreach for grants and resources for residents impacted by these raids, can empower our community members and provide much-needed support.
Support from the Covina & W. Covina City Council is vital for these initiatives to succeed. Sign the petition today to urge the Council to adopt the Los Angeles Federal Mask Ban, recognize the economic impacts of immigration raids, and create sustained community support and education initiatives.
