Hello Everyone!
We have over 400 signatures on our petition for the cities of West Covina and Covina. We have provided updates below. Join us at our next meeting- Spinning Plates Records -668 Shoppers Lane, Covina, CA 91723, Covina, CA on Thursday, January 15 at 7:30 pm. We need you now- the people of the communities we serve and live with- to get involved in our organization to continue to grow!
Use our Linktree to connect with us on socials and contribute to Mutual Aid however possible:
In the City of Covina, there has been:
- Minimal movement with an "Ad Hoc" created at least three months ago, with two City Council members on it with legal counsel, with the purpose to look into immigration policies, laws, created with no public updates required; and none given.
- Due to advocacy and members of SGVoices speaking out with other residents, the city of Covina created a partnership with the IRC of SGV, which included one tabling event at the library.
- Covina City Council passed an ordinance to criminalize unhoused people in accordance with City of Grants Pass v. Johnson.
West Covina City Council has done nothing in regards to the ICE Raids.
People have been disappearing from both cities of Covina & West Covina for the last several months. No elected officials in either city (Councilmembers, Clerks, Treasurers) have come out to condemn ICE Raids besides Hector Delgado (once) in Covina and Covina City Treasurer Neil Polzin (multiple times).
The past 5 months, we have spoken out at city council meetings, used mutual aid funds to support: day laborers, flower vendors, and food vendors. We have conducted rapid responses to raids and provided financial support when possible to community members. We continue mutual aid partnerships with Operation Healthy Hearts, Spinning Plates Records, and so many more.
Take the time to pause, breathe, and be together-we need one another.
We hope to see you soon,
Dr. Bri Sérráno (he/they)
