The Issue

The citation accompanying Cunningham's Air Force Cross reads, "Despite effective enemy fire, and at great risk to his own life, Airman Cunningham remained in the burning fuselage of the aircraft in order to treat the wounds. As he moved his patients to a more secure location, mortar rounds began to impact within 50 feet of his position. "Disregarding this extreme danger, he continued the movement and exposed himself to enemy fire on seven separate occasions. When the second casualty collection point was also compromised, in a display of uncommon valor and gallantry, Airman Cunningham braved an intense small arms and rocket-propelled grenade attack while repositioning the critically wounded to a third collection point." The citation continues, "Even after he was mortally wounded and quickly deteriorating, he continued to direct patient movement and transferred care to another medic. In the end, his distinct efforts led to the successful delivery of 10 gravely wounded Americans to life-saving medical treatment."

On March 4, 2002, SRA Jason Cunningham was the primary Air Force Combat Search and Rescue medic assigned to a Quick Reaction Force tasked to recover two American servicemen evading capture in austere terrain occupied by massed Al Qaida and Taliban forces. Jason made the ultimate sacrifice while serving our nation in the Battle of Takur Ghar. This petition is inspired by the enduring grief and loss experienced by the parents of this SRA Cunningham. They continue to mourn their beloved son, whose acts of valor and courage deserve the highest recognition — the Medal of Honor.

The Medal of Honor is the highest and most prestigious military decoration awarded to recognize American service members who have distinguished themselves by acts of valor. It is reserved for those whose sacrifices and heroism go above and beyond the call of duty. Our nation's fallen hero fits this distinction, and it is time that the United States Congress acknowledges his bravery.

Why now? Beyond the personal depth of this request, it's a matter of historical and moral significance. Awarding the Medal of Honor not only honors this serviceman's courage but also provides some measure of solace to his grieving parents and sister. It's an overdue recognition for his service, an acknowledgment of his bravery, and a commitment from our nation to uphold the values he fought and died for.

Concrete steps to achieve this goal include gathering community support, providing detailed documents and testimonies of the hero’s military actions, and urging a member of Congress to officially a review of his record to possibly upgrade his Air Force Cross to the Medal of Honor.

The family and friends of the fallen hero, along with supporters nationwide, can play a critical role by sharing his story, emphasizing his heroism, and lobbying Congress members to take action.

Join us in honoring this American hero. Sign this petition to urge members of the United States Congress to recommend a review of newly available information in order to award the Medal of Honor for this deserving serviceman. Together, let's honor his legacy and bring comfort to his family.
