Urge Coles Mid North Coast to support local farmers
The issue
As a concerned resident of the Coffs Harbour region and an advocate for our hardworking Mid North Coast farmers, I am saddened by the decision of Coles Mid North Coast Stores including Coffs Harbour, Moonee, and Toormina – to cease direct sourcing of fresh local bananas, cucumbers, and Kent and butternut pumpkins from our local farmers. This move threatens not only the livelihoods of our dedicated local growers but also our community's access to fresh, high-quality produce.
Local farmers are the backbone of our community. They nurture the land, uphold sustainable farming practices, and offer us produce that is both fresh and grown with care and dedication right here in our region. By choosing not to support them, we risk losing an integral part of our local economy and our communal heritage.
According to industry reports, buying local produce not only supports the farmers directly but also reduces carbon footprints, enhances food security, and ensures that consumers enjoy fresher, more nutritious products. In a community-focused region like Coffs Harbour, it is essential that our leading retailers reflect our values by supporting local enterprise and sustainability.
Moreover, the economic impact on our local growers cannot be understated. The agriculture sector in our area provides numerous jobs, keeping our economy robust and thriving. The absence of direct buying from Coles could mean a significant financial setback for families that have farmed these lands for generations.
We urge Coles to reconsider their sourcing strategy and reinstate the direct purchasing agreements with our local farmers. This action not only aligns with sustainable business practices but fosters stronger community ties and mutual growth. Neighboring regions that have maintained supportive retail partnerships report increased farmer sustainability and community satisfaction.
This petition is a call to action for Coffs Harbour residents and beyond to stand in solidarity with our local farmers. By signing, you can help us send a powerful message to Coles, urging them to prioritize local produce over distant alternatives. Together, we can hold them accountable and ensure our community continues to thrive with the support of our farmers.
Please sign this petition to demand that Coles Coffs Harbour honors their responsibility to our community and supports our local farmers once again.
