Urge Co-op Group to continue the lease for our local, much loved family run garden centre!

Urge Co-op Group to continue the lease for our local, much loved family run garden centre!
The Issue
Since 2024, The Co-op Group's strapline 'Owned By You, Right By You' claims member ownership and community benefit as their priority. The idea of being a different, fairer business owned by its members, focusing on making a difference in our communities.
However.
Harpins at Ackworth Garden Centre has been at the heart of our village for almost 26 years. It’s not just a place to buy plants; it’s a vibrant hub of social activity and connection. Many of us have fond memories of visiting the centre's café, meeting friends and family, buying gifts for loved ones. For many families, the annual visit to see Santa and the enchanting Christmas grotto is a magical tradition that has been cherished across generations.
Now we are facing the devastating news that the Co-op Group is planning to evict this beloved family-run business by 31st January 2026. The garden centre is more than just a business; it acts as a brilliant employer, providing jobs to many and supporting the local economy. It's a sanctuary for regular visitors who might not have the means to travel far, offering them a space to engage with staff, enjoy a chat, and wander around a familiar, friendly place.
This garden centre is integral to our local identity and accessible to many who are unable to drive, setting it apart as a unique spot in our village. Its closure would mean more than just losing a business; we would lose a landmark of togetherness and a cornerstone of our community life. The staff are like a family, some having worked there for many years. They would be left unemployed at not only a tough time of year, but a time when most of us are struggling with the ever increasing cost of living.
I urge you to join me in asking the Co-op Group to reconsider their decision to terminate the garden centre's lease. This is not just a fight for a business but a stand for the community spirit that has flourished around it. Every signature strengthens our voice and plea to save this indispensable part of our lives.
The Co-Op Group is supposed to represent and support our local communities, their recent advert mentioning 'Strength in Numbers'! Their behaviour towards this local family business is unethical and goes against everything the Co-Op claim to value and protect!
Let's not forget Bidens the cat too! He was taken in by Harpins and is a much loved and much visited member of the staff! He chose to live at the garden centre, he would also be saddened to lose his chosen home which he loves and thrives in. Not to mention his huge family who all visit him.
Please sign this petition to show your support in keeping our cherished garden centre open and flourishing for many more years to come.
