This week, my life could have ended at the infamous Haddon Windermere Rd and Cuthberts Rd intersection in Ballarat. In a terrifying high-speed collision that left both cars in absolute ruin, mine spiraled uncontrollably, ending in a paddock with the door ripped off, the wheel torn from the axle, and the drive shaft shattered. By a stroke of fate, both drivers miraculously escaped with minor injuries amidst the shock and intense trauma.

This intersection is notorious within our community for near-miss incidents, and has already accounted for numerous accidents—some tragically resulting in serious injuries. It's imperative that we recognize the urgent need for the City of Ballarat to address the evident dangers associated with this particular crossing.

For years, the community has lived in apprehension due to the insufficient safety measures at this crossing. Rural setting, long stretches of road and the high-speed limits on these converging roads, coupled with visual hazards only escalate the peril drivers and face daily. This area has increased in traffic in line with increases in population in the Ballarat West region.  Heavy vehicle traffic is also more prevalent with nearby sale yards now well established.  

While incidents continue to be reported, little has been done to combat the pattern of accidents, leading to a growing concern for both local residents and commuters. We propose practical measures such as the installation of proper signage highlighting a reduced speed limit, implementation of round about and speed bumps to enhance visibility and awareness.

Statistical evidence is sobering: intersections lacking essential safety infrastructure witness an alarming rate of accidents. Enhancing road safety measures will not only protect community members but also ensure a smoother flow of traffic, ultimately saving lives and reducing trauma.

We earnestly appeal to the City of Ballarat to take decisive action by initiating a comprehensive review of the road safety infrastructure at this intersection. By adopting these changes, we can prevent the anguish and suffering that far too many have endured. Together, let us prioritize safety and create a safer environment for everyone in Ballarat.
