Flock Safety is a private company that has made its fortune off of selling ALPR (Automated License Plate Reader) and other surveillance technology to law enforcement offices, HOAs, and businesses. Chesapeake has over 333 cameras already from Flock. While we want Chesapeake to be a safe city. The expansion of Flock cameras in Chesapeake poses a major threat to the privacy of our citizens.

Numerous concerns we have with Flock include

-Their placement in predominantly African American neighborhoods already

-Abuse by bad actors in possession of the data

-Citizen’s private data being sold 

-Little to no oversight

We urge incumbent members of the council and all candidates seeking election to City Council on November 4th to join us in opposing this gross negligence of people’s privacy. This issue should be nonpartisan and we hope all 15 candidates can commit to this message.

Chesapeake can be safer without turning it into a mass surveillance state.
