As an advocate for accessible play equipment, I am deeply concerned about the recent actions of the Central Coast Council. Just six months ago, the Liberty Swing at Budgewoi was dismantled and replaced with what they described as an "accessible sea-saw"—a piece of equipment that is anything but. Not only is it difficult for many wheelchair users to access, but it also fails to provide the vestibular stimulation that so many wheelchair users require. Now, the council plans to remove the only remaining Liberty Swing at Long Jetty, proposing instead several so-called "accessible" options that cannot compare.

The Liberty Swing is a fantastic piece of equipment that allows wheelchair users to enjoy the sensation of swinging—a liberating experience that offers both physical and emotional benefits. For many wheelchair users, it's not just a playground apparatus but a crucial part of our day-to-day well-being. The removal of these swings without adequate replacement feels not only like a loss but a step backward in inclusivity for our community.

According to statistics, people with disabilities represent around 15% of the world's population, and Australia is no exception. The need for truly accessible play equipment has never been more critical. Local councils across Australia need to understand the difference between merely "ticking boxes" with poorly-designed solutions and actually providing equipment that meets our diverse needs. As it stands, the proposed replacements fall short; they are neither innovative nor supportive of the physical and sensory experiences they aim to offer.

Instead of removing the last Liberty Swing, we urge the Central Coast Council to replace the current Liberty Swing with another Liberty Swing, ensuring these vital amenities remain accessible to all. Not only would this benefit wheelchair users, but it would also serve as a beacon of inclusivity, showing that our community values all its members equally.

We are calling on the Central Coast Council to reconsider this decision and engage with disability advocates and community members to explore options that genuinely serve the needs of wheelchair users.
