The Issue

Like many other residents of Baltimore, MD, I have been grappling with escalating car insurance premiums that have become practically unaffordable. The undue financial stress that this places on me and countless others is a heavy one and reflects an unjust and unequal system.

In recent years, the car insurance industry has done better than ever financially, yet the cost of premiums for the average policyholder has skyrocketed. While insurance companies attribute these increases to multiple factors including car price inflation and a rise in road catastrophes, the corresponding increase in our premiums feels disproportional and penalizing for the average policyholder.

Scrutiny of car insurance rates in Baltimore has shown significant and seemingly unwarranted variation - with troubling patterns that lead to some being penalized for their demographic information or personal circumstances, rather than risk factors associated with their driving.

We, the policyholders, are not the beneficiaries of the exorbitant amounts we are compelled to pay. Instead, we are victims of a system that prioritizes profit over people. It's high time to usher in a more transparent, equitable, and humane system.

This petition implores state and national authorities to examine why car insurance companies are permitted to indiscriminately hike rates. We need a thorough investigation to ensure that insurance companies are not exploiting policyholders under the guise of risk management.

We demand fairness, justice, and peace of mind when paying our car insurance premiums. Our ability to commute safely and affordably must not be infringed upon by the unfair practices of car insurance companies. Please, sign this petition to join the fight against unfair car insurance practices.
