The Issue

I recently took the 2026 IGCSE Maths exam under the Cambridge Examination Board, and like many other students around the world, I was devastated by the unexpected difficulty of the paper. This year's Extended Maths exam was much more challenging than previous years, putting unfair pressure on students who have been preparing diligently.

For years, the IGCSE Maths exams have maintained a level of consistency in terms of difficulty, allowing students to prepare adequately and achieve their potential. This unprecedented increase in difficulty not only affects our grades but also impacts our future opportunities in education and careers. Students who have set their sights on courses or professions requiring strong mathematics scores now face unwarranted obstacles in reaching their goals.

Cambridge should consider the context of this situation. In past exams, the question papers provided a balance that tested understanding without overwhelming students. Consequently, an abrupt shift this year has led to stress and disappointment among students worldwide. It is only fair that Cambridge addresses this issue through solutions such as re-evaluation of the marking scheme, awarding grace marks, or even reconducting the exams.

Moreover, a retrospective analysis of this year's exam against past papers shows a significant deviation from the standard difficulty. Cambridge has a responsibility to ensure that exams are equitable and reflect the curriculum accurately. By not addressing this sudden increase in difficulty, they risk undermining the credibility of their qualifications.

We are asking Cambridge to acknowledge the unique challenges this year's exam has posed. Taking steps such as grade boundary adjustments or exam re-administration could provide students with a fair chance to demonstrate their knowledge appropriately. Students across the globe deserve an opportunity to reflect their true capabilities without being hindered by disproportionately difficult examinations.

Join us in urging Cambridge to take necessary actions in rectifying the fairness of the 2026 IGCSE Maths exam. Your signature could help make a difference for countless students who are striving for success amidst these challenges. Please sign and share this petition to ensure fair academic evaluations for all. Together, we can advocate for ethical and equitable educational standards. Sign the petition today!
