As proud volunteer of our local community, I have witnessed first-hand the positive impact that the Western Suburbs Soccer Club (WSSC) has on our children and families. Our club, founded in Sunshine West, is more than just a place where kids play soccer, it’s a vital community hub that brings people together and mentors young talent. Yet, our growing number of junior players are faced with limited resources, as WSSC struggles with access to only one training ground for all our sessions.

This petition addresses an urgent need for the Council to provide WSSC with access to a second training ground. Our current facilities are insufficient for the growing number of keen youngsters who come to train every week. The lack of adequate space not only hampers their sports development but also limits their opportunity to engage positively with their peers in a structured environment.

The need for additional space is not merely about expanding a club; it’s about nurturing our future community leaders and fostering healthy lifestyles. Consider the numerous studies highlighting the benefits of sports participation. According to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, regular physical activity in childhood contributes to better mental health, increases academic performance, and lowers the risk of developing chronic diseases later in life. However, these benefits can only be realized if our young athletes have the necessary resources and space to train, learn, and grow.

In providing a second training ground, the Council will be affirming its commitment to supporting youth development programs and promoting an active, engaged community. This action will show that the Council values its young residents and invests in their future. In turn, the community will thrive with stronger social bonds and a shared sense of pride and accomplishment.

I urge you to think of the children of Sunshine West who deserve both the chance to follow their sporting dreams and the myriad benefits that come with participating in team sports. Our Council’s support is crucial to making this a reality. Let’s come together to secure a brighter future for our kids.
