The recent decision by the councillors of the Town of Bracebridge, ON, Canada to change all speed limits on town roads to 40km/hr has raised concerns among residents. This new speed limit is significantly lower than the average urban speed limit in Canada, which is typically between 50 and 60 km/hr (source: Transport Canada). While we appreciate efforts to improve road safety, this drastic reduction may cause unnecessary inconvenience without significantly improving safety. In fact, studies have shown that traffic flow can be negatively impacted when speed limits are set too low (source: Canadian Automobile Association).
