Urge Bell, Rogers, Fido, Telus, and Freedom to provide free calls to Iran

The Issue

The Goal
We are calling on Bell, Rogers, Fido, Telus, and Freedom Mobile to immediately waive all long-distance calling and SMS fees from Canada to Iran.

The Situation
On January 8, 2026, the Iranian authorities imposed a total nationwide internet shutdown. This blackout follows weeks of intensified protests that began on December 28, 2025. By cutting off the internet, the regime has not only silenced the Iranian people but has also severed the only lifeline between millions of Canadians and their families back home.

As of today, reports from human rights organizations indicate that thousands have been killed or arrested. Without internet access, Iranians in Canada are left in a state of constant localized trauma, unable to verify the safety or whereabouts of their loved ones.

Why This Matters
Communication is a human right, especially in times of crisis.

  1. Humanitarian Necessity: For many, a standard phone call is now the only way to reach home. However, the high cost of international calling creates a financial barrier that many cannot afford during an emergency.
  2. Precedent for Action: In September 2022, during the "Woman Life Freedom" movement, Rogers, Bell, and Telus stepped up and waived these fees to support the community. We are asking you to show that same leadership and compassion again.
  3. Mental Health: The stress of "digital silence" is devastating. Allowing free communication provides essential emotional support to the over 200,000 Iranian-Canadians who are currently fearing for their families' lives.

Our Demand
We urge Canada’s major telecommunications providers to:

  1. Waive all fees for long-distance calls and SMS messages from Canada to Iran effective immediately.
  2. Maintain this support until the internet infrastructure in Iran is fully restored and stable.
  3. Ensure inclusivity by applying these changes to both post-paid and pre-paid customers (including flanker brands like Virgin Plus, Koodo, and Lucky Mobile).

Canada has a proud history of standing for human rights. We ask our telecom leaders to stand with us now. Please sign and share to help us reconnect families.
