Urge Batavia District 101 to comply with Illinois PE regulations
The Issue
Students and their parents across Batavia Public School District 101 are already facing challenges due to a lack of adequate physical education being provided to students. These students are in desperate need of time and space outside their everyday classroom settings to move, exercise, and refresh their minds. Sitting still in a classroom for hours on end is negatively impacting their mental and physical well-being. This can cause students to come home feeling upset and dysregulated, affecting not just their academic performance but also their general happiness and health.
Illinois state law requires public schools to provide sufficient physical education (PE) hours for students K-12 to ensure students develop the knowledge and skills they need to maintain a healthy lifestyle. According to the Illinois School Code, students are required PE a minimum of 3 days per 5- day week, unless exempted for specific reasons. Batavia Public School District also has its own Curriculum Content policy supporting this requirement. Unfortunately, it has come to our attention that Batavia Public School District 101 is not fully adhering to the state guidelines or its own policy. In fact, students in K-5 will only participate in PE once a week, sometimes twice, depending on the rotation of specials. Due to the scheduling at Rotolo Middle School and Batavia High School, many students only have PE one semester out of the year. Thus, depriving our children of their rightful physical development and well-being.
Research suggests that regular physical activity significantly improves students' concentration, memory, and classroom behavior. Moreover, it fosters essential life skills such as teamwork, leadership, and resilience. This district must prioritize students' holistic development by providing them with the necessary physical education as per state law.
Let's urge Batavia Public School District 101 to revise their current schedule to incorporate the mandated PE hours effectively. By doing so, students can benefit from improved physical and mental health, leading to enhanced academic performance and overall happiness. Sign this petition to support our students' right to comprehensive physical education and help shape a healthier future for them. Our students deserve better! Your signature can make a difference!
