Urge Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council to Stop Using X (formerly Twitter)

Urge Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council to Stop Using X (formerly Twitter)
The Issue
Introduction:
We, the undersigned, call on Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council to cease using X (formerly Twitter) as an official communication platform. Recent actions and statements by X's owner, Elon Musk, conflict with the values of inclusivity, respect, and accountability that the Council upholds.
Background and Rationale:
Elon Musk has recently made statements promoting hate speech, particularly targeting UK politicians, such as Jess Phillips MP. This conduct not only undermines the platform’s integrity but also perpetuates harmful and divisive rhetoric. By continuing to use X, Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council inadvertently supports and legitimises this platform, which is inconsistent with its commitment to serving a diverse and respectful community.
Why This Matters:
1. Fostering Safe and Respectful Engagement: The Council should use platforms that promote inclusivity and reject hate speech.
2. Maintaining the Council’s Values and Reputation: By associating with X, the Council risks being linked to the platform’s harmful practices.
3. Exploring Alternative Channels: There are many viable, inclusive platforms where the Council can effectively engage with residents.
Our Request:
We respectfully urge Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council to:
1. Immediately review its use of X as a communication platform.
2. Transition to alternative platforms that align with the values of inclusivity and respect.
3. Develop a forward-looking communication strategy that ensures accessibility and inclusivity for all residents.
