Urge Ashford Borough Council to Rethink Monypenny Redevelopment

The Issue

The beloved Monypenny Independent Living Scheme in Rolvenden near Cranbrook, is under threat as Ashford Borough Council are proposing to submit plans shortlyto demolish it; displacing its elderly residents for at least two years, to unknown random locations elswhere in the borough against their wishes, and away from their support networks.

This decision has caused significant concern among the community, especially as it affects our most vulnerable citizens who have their homes in Monypenny.

Monypenny is not just a building; it's a sanctuary where the elderly have formed deep connections and found peace in their twilight years. Forced relocation would disrupt their lives, sever their networks of friends and caregivers, and potentially pose risks to their physical and mental well-being.

Studies have shown that stability and familiar surroundings are crucial for the health and happiness of older adults (source: Age UK). Moving them will lead to increased anxiety, depression, and even health decline.

We acknowledge the need for development and modernisation and Affordable Homes, but we urge Ashford Borough Council to consider some alternative solutions that are less disruptive to the residents.

We would welcome a new Development, provided it does not involve uprooting elderly residents and casting them to the wind to unknown locations against their will.

Options include Building The New Monypenny first using the adjacent vicarage site(already purchased ABC) and, when complete,r elocate residents in it and then demolish the existing Monypenny building? . This is the least disruptive option most favoured by residents and the community and although this proposal was put forward with original Plans 2 years ago by ABC ,has not been pursued at all and should now be explored further.

Should the possibility of purchasing The adjacent land at Glebe Field become a reality, this would offer other suitable and far less disruptive options for the new build including the inclusion of New Bungalows for the residents who, for no reason, are expected to downgrade from their existing bungalow to an apartment if they wish to remain in the new build when completed.

It's crucial we protect the dignity and well-being of our elderly community members, ensuring they continue to live in familiar and supportive environments.

By signing this petition, you will help send a strong message to Ashford Borough Council that the residents of Monypenny deserve better.

Let’s stand together for a compassionate approach to a development that respects and preserves the quality of life for Rolvenden's elderly.

Moving Home is recognised as being one of the most stressful operations to go through even for the healthy younger community.  To expect 30 plus members of Rolvenden’s Elderly community to experience this twice is simply unacceptable.

Please add your signature to our petition, calling for viable alternatives that ensure the safety and happiness of Monypenny’s residents by ensuring they remain in Rolvenden.

Together, we can make a difference.
