Urge Alvin ISD to reconsider their 2026-'27 clear backpack policy

The Issue

The 2026-27 Clear Backpack policy is a unilateral change that has largely been perceived by the student body as malicious.

The policy was posted to AlvinISD's official website quietly on April 13th, with no email or contact to any parents, students, or teachers. On May 3rd, 2026, a screenshot of the policy began circulating on students' social medias: the only public mention of the policy, none by AlvinISD itself. See the policy here.

While the rules themselves are exceedingly strict "Are lunch kits permitted? Yes. Non-transparent lunch kits no larger than approximately 6” x 9” x 5”" and even seemingly contradictory, "Are transparent colored backpacks allowed? No." "Can the backpack have colored straps? Yes.",  these factors are not even the primary issue.

The implementation of this policy consisted of quietly slipping it through the cracks in an effort that students, parents, and teachers who saw the policy as unfair wouldn't even get a chance to put their word in before the policy was initiated. Had a student in AlvinISD not found the website, there would presumably be zero mention of it until the start of the 2026-27 school year, and the district could then say that it was put into effect months ago.

Additionally, in the second semester of 2026, metal detectors were delivered to Iowa Colony High School on the courtesy of AlvinISD. The metal detectors were enforced for a singular day, where at random they would call aside students to go beneath the detector. The next day, they were removed-never to be used again. Given that an AlvinISD school cannot even implement basic safety responsibilities on their own accord, why should they put that responsibility onto all schools' students?

Students all throughout AlvinISD--from Pre-School to their Senior Year--will no longer be given the right to express themselves, privacy, or their own choices with their belongings, all while AlvinISD refuses to hold up their end of the safety "bargain", and silently slips in more unfair policies. Sign this petition to show that this injustice will not stand, and email members of AlvinISD's Board of Trustees, listed here.

The students of AlvinISD are counting on you, and they thank you.
