Urge Allegany County to sue for FEMA aid and end 287g program

The Issue

On May 13-14, 2025, Allegany County, Maryland was ravaged by a devastating flood that left our community in dire straits. As a resident, I've seen firsthand the damages sustained by our county, which has forced many of us to bear the brunt of potential extreme property tax hikes, a burden that we simply cannot afford. We believe it is essential that Allegany County government pursue legal action against the Trump Administration for its failure to provide crucial FEMA aid during our time of need.

Allegany County deserves the $35 million in flood damages that rightfully belong to us to facilitate recovery and rebuilding efforts. This isn't just about receiving financial support; it's about holding those in power accountable and demanding what is just. By pursuing this lawsuit, our county can set a precedent that neglecting disaster-ravaged communities is not acceptable and will not go unchecked.

In addition to seeking rightful compensation, Allegany County should suspend its participation in the 287g program. This partnership with the federal government for immigration detention has not only strained local resources but has become a tool of retaliation we can leverage against the federal government's inaction. By ceasing to hold Federal Inmates for the FBI and US Marshals, we send a strong message about prioritizing our community's needs and resources, especially when they have failed to come to our aid.

This is not just a fight for financial restitution; it's a fight for justice and dignity. It's a call to protect the well-being of Allegany County residents and ensure that we are not left abandoned in our time of crisis. I urge you to stand with our community in demanding that Allegany County take these steps to secure our future and fight for the aid we deserve. Please sign this petition to support our cause and make our voices heard.
