Growing up in Allegan County, I have cherished the memories made at the annual county fair – a vibrant showcase of agriculture, community spirit, and shared happiness. But in recent years, I've grown increasingly concerned about one aspect that doesn't align with the values of love and respect we treasure in our community: the use of sea lions for entertainment at the Sea Lion Splash.

Travelling marine mammal shows, such as Sea Lion Splash, involve complex logistics that are far from ideal for these intelligent, social animals. Renowned marine and wildlife organizations, including the World Animal Protection and Humane Society International, have documented the stress and discomfort these shows impose. The sea lions are often transported in cramped tanks, spending countless hours on the road, which can severely affect their well-being, leading to stress-related illnesses and shortened lifespans.

Moreover, the conditions at the fairground are not suitable for these creatures. Surrounded by loud music, bright lights, and large bustling crowds, the sea lions are confined to small pools that barely give them the space to swim, interact, and behave naturally. This falls severely short of the naturally intricate and stimulating coastal environments they require to thrive.

By ending the use of sea lions in entertainment, the Allegan County Fair has an opportunity to become a leader in ethical practices, joining a growing movement towards compassion in entertainment.
