Urge Alabama Legislature to Extend SNAP/PEBT Benefits During Summer

The Issue

As an educator and a mother, I witness firsthand the economic burden that families face during the summer months. When school is out, parents are suddenly responsible for providing three meals a day for their children. This can be an overwhelming task when funds are scarce and free summer programs are insufficient in number.

In Alabama, 22% of children live in food-insecure households (Feeding America). These families rely on programs like SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) and PEBT (Pandemic Electronic Benefit Transfer) to help feed their children during the school year. However, these benefits do not extend into the summer months when they may be needed most.

We call upon our representatives in the Alabama Legislature to address this issue by extending SNAP/PEBT benefits into the summer months. By doing so, we can ensure that no child goes hungry during their break from school simply because their family cannot afford additional meals.

This is not just about alleviating financial strain; it's about ensuring our children have access to nutritious meals all year round. It's about giving every child in Montgomery—and throughout Alabama—the chance to thrive.

Please join us in urging our lawmakers to make this crucial change. Sign this petition today!
