The issue

The Tasmanian community has long awaited a chance to cheer for their own AFL team, the Tasmanian Devils. As passionate supporters, we are left questioning why existing facilities such as UTAS Stadium and Blundstone Arena are deemed suitable for teams like North Melbourne and Hawthorn but are not considered adequate for the Tasmanian Devils. Our community deserves an answer and a realistic solution that will preserve the character of our state and avoid unnecessary expenditure.

Currently, the AFL and the Tasmanian Government are in discussions that involve a hefty $775 million proposal for a new stadium at Macquarie Point in Hobart. In our view, this significant investment could be avoided if the AFL were genuinely willing to work alongside Tasmania's existing infrastructure. UTAS Stadium and Blundstone Arena are both fully functional venues that have successfully hosted high-profile AFL matches in the past.

In an era where financial prudence should be paramount, demanding a new stadium seems extravagant, particularly when current alternatives prove more than capable. The enthusiasm of Tasmanian residents to support a local team does not require a new facility; it requires the commitment from the AFL to recognize the potential that already exists here.

Supporting the Tasmanian Devils should not mean diverting significant taxpayer funds into new projects when perfectly viable, cost-effective options are already at our disposal. Our community's sporting spirit, passion, and dedication can make the team thrive from UTAS Stadium and Blundstone Arena.

Call upon AFL CEO Mr. Andrew Dillon and the AFL Commission to seriously reconsider the current stance on stadium development in Tasmania. We urge you all to sign this petition to help turn the Tasmanian Devils into a reality without the burden of unnecessary expenditure. Let's bring the game home, to stadiums that are part of our proud tradition, and witness the Tasmanian Devils take flight in the AFL. Sign now and support our call for a fair, sensible, and sustainable outcome for Tasmania!
