Your efforts supporting Justice for Jeremy are making a difference! As you may not know, Jan Bennets, the Ada County Prosecutor, is facing resistance from law enforcement regarding initiating an impartial third-party review. But why the reluctance? An unbiased review can only serve to ensure that the Critical Incident Task Force conducted a complete, accurate, and fair investigation. We strongly believe they completely disregarded the first encounter with Jeremy at our residence. Despite being aware of his mental state and possession of a dangerous weapon, they chose to ignore the issue of officer safety by not taking control of the weapon. Furthermore, they showed no concern for public safety when they pointed their weapons at Jeremy's back as he walked away in a densely populated neighborhood. In his report, Detective Steele admits to holding an AR15 at Jeremy without fully understanding the situation. He also claims Jeremy was "amping up for war," which is not supported by the video footage from our home. Throughout the encounter, they repeatedly told him he was free to go, but it was clear that he was in crisis. We believe he wanted to come back into the house, but they continued to yell at him to leave. Why didn't they let us know what was going on when they first discovered he had a weapon in our yard? An impartial third-party review is necessary to uncover the truth and ensure justice is served. In addition, officer training and updated policies and procedures can only enhance public safety in these encounters. Right now, in the Treasure Valley 14 ongoing officer-involved shooting investigations are pending 13 of those are from 2023.
