On January 17, 2013, Harry Kalaba, the former PF Minister of Lands, Natural Resources, and Environmental Protection, betrayed our confidence by defying ZEMA's advice and granting approval for mining activities in the Lower Zambezi. Heavy metal extraction from the earth is a difficult and frequently risky operation that involves blasting rocks, deep drilling, and the use of toxic chemicals if allowed. It can leave profound scars in the environment and local communities, if done recklessly, such as polluting air and drinking water, harming wildlife and habitat, and permanently scarring natural landscapes, as seen by numerous horror stories.
