UPMC: Protect Trans Kids’ Medical Privacy—Refuse the DOJ Subpoena
The Issue
As parents and allies, we are calling on UPMC to take an immediate and public stand against the federal government’s attempt to access confidential medical records of transgender youth.
Under pressure from the Trump Administration, the U.S. Department of Justice has issued a sweeping subpoena demanding that UPMC turn over detailed records of young patients who have received gender-affirming care—names, Social Security numbers, parent information, doctor’s notes, even private Zoom transcripts. This is an unprecedented breach of patient privacy and a chilling attack on the rights of trans youth and their families.
So far, UPMC has refused to confirm whether it will protect its patients. In the meantime, they have halted gender-affirming care entirely, leaving families in limbo—and in fear. Parents have sent letters, made calls, and pleaded for answers, but UPMC has offered no assurance that it will resist this gross violation of privacy.
This goes beyond politics. This is about whether families can trust their doctors to protect the most intimate details of their children’s care. Whether hospitals will safeguard patient data—or silently hand it over when the government comes knocking. Whether a parent’s right to make medical decisions for their child will be respected—or erased.
Other hospitals, like CHOP, are pushing back in court. UPMC must do the same.
We are demanding that UPMC:
- Publicly commit to protecting all patient data from unjust federal subpoenas
- Refuse to comply with any request that identifies trans youth by name or personal data
- Restore gender-affirming care in line with medical ethics and anti-discrimination laws
UPMC is one of the most powerful hospital systems in the country. Its actions now will set the tone for how patient privacy—and trans rights—are defended across the nation.
Trans youth deserve care. Parents deserve answers. And every family deserves privacy. Tell UPMC to do the right thing.
