Uphold Prince Reza Pahlavi's Invitation to the Tweede Kamer
The Issue
To: Mr. Jesse Klaver, Chair of the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs (Voorzitter van de vaste commissie voor Buitenlandse Zaken); Ms. Queeny Rajkowski, Vice-Chair of the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs; and The Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs
To: The Honorable Members of the Dutch House of Representatives (Tweede Kamer)
To: Mr. Thom van Campen, Speaker of the House of Representatives (Voorzitter van de Tweede Kamer)
Honorable Members and the Speaker of the Dutch Parliament, and the Chair, Vice-Chair and Members of the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs,
We, a broad representation of the Iranian community in the Netherlands, urgently request you to maintain the invitation to Crown Prince Reza Pahlavi to the House of Representatives (Tweede Kamer). This request comes in response to efforts by certain groups—largely associated with the Islamic Republic regime and the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI/MEK), a group previously designated as a terrorist organization—to pressure parliament into canceling this visit [link to an example].
Key Considerations:
- A Representative Leader: Crown Prince Reza Pahlavi is a vital voice for millions of Iranians inside and outside Iran. This was clearly demonstrated when millions answered his call to action on January 6, taking to the streets on January 8–9 and calling his name in unity against the current theocratic regime (as evidenced by hundreds of footages and his Instagram reel for the call to action, which has above 95 million views [link]). The same holds true for Iranians in the diaspora. Above 1 million Iranians gathered in major cities like Munich, Toronto, Los Angles, London, Vancouver, after his call for a Global Day of Action [link].
- Fostering Open Dialogue: An invitation to the House of Representatives (Tweede Kamer) does not endorse a specific political system; it recognizes geopolitical reality. Excluding a major opposition figure harms democratic debate and restricts the parliament's access to diverse perspectives on the Middle East.
- Resisting Pressure and Polarization: Canceling this visit under pressure from specific factions sets a dangerous precedent for political exclusion. Discussions within the House of Representatives (Tweede Kamer) are conducted with full transparency and security, contrary to claims of "backroom politics" by some groups.
Our Call to Action:
We call upon the House of Representatives (Tweede Kamer) and the Committee on Foreign Affairs to:
- Uphold the invitation and reject external pressure to silence opposition voices.
- Keep the doors of parliament open for a transparent discussion with Crown Prince Reza Pahlavi regarding human rights and the democratic future of Iran.
- Defend the Netherlands' reputation as a sanctuary for free speech and diplomatic dialogue.
The Dutch parliament must remain an inclusive space for democratic discourse. Do not allow this important opportunity for dialogue to be lost.
Sincerely,
- Lion and Sun Stichting, Netherlands (Mithra)
