The Issue

Growing up and studying in the School District of Philadelphia, I remember being in the sixth grade when we first faced a threat to our safety. Since then, it's become a harrowing yearly occurrence that students have to deal with threats of gun violence or stabbings. Our school community deserves to feel safe, yet these incidents are brushed off without any substantial upgrade to our security measures.

Statistics reveal the stark reality that the United States has the highest gun violence rates among developed nations. In schools, this crisis has become particularly pronounced. A recent study by the National Center for Education Statistics showed that in the 2019-2020 school year alone, there were 93 school shootings in the U.S. Such numbers highlight a critical need for better safety measures in our educational institutions.

Despite these alarming facts, the School District of Philadelphia has yet to make significant changes. This is unacceptable. We, the students, teachers, and families of Philadelphia, urge the district to immediately prioritize school safety by implementing comprehensive security upgrades. Such improvements could include policy that requires visitors to go through metal detectors, or increasing door security so that not just anyone can enter the building and do whatever they would like.

By taking these steps, we can create a safer environment for students and staff alike, fostering a space where learning and teaching can thrive without fear. Our children's lives and educational experiences should not be compromised due to lax security measures.

We demand action now. The safety of our school community rests in the hands of the School District of Philadelphia, and it is time for them to fulfill this critical responsibility.

Please sign this petition to urge the School District of Philadelphia to take immediate action and protect our schools.
