Well I got a reply from the city today which shows progress!!! Some changes are already planned to help the situation which is good but we still don’t have the full details of the city plan as they are still reviewing the 3rd party consultation report. Here is the email reply I Recieved:

”Hi Chistina,

I had an excellent summer, thank you for asking. In your email below I noted a few questions, I outlined each of these questions and numbered them following the sequential numbering in the previous email. This attempt to itemize the conversation is intended to limit confusion with our ongoing discussion. Please note:

Question 19 (2023-09-05 email from Christina Holland)

I’ve spoken to the Property Manager from CTS who was responsible for this study on July 1st and he advised me that the results would be sent to your department within 1 week. It has now been 9 weeks and we have not heard anything about the results of this survey and the plan the city has to move forward with making this intersection safer for children, parents, other pedestrians and drivers.

Response (2023-09-07 email sent by Mark Halpin)

We were not aware of the timeline that our consultant provided to you. It is not a typical practice for a resident to directly interact with our consultant and establish a timeline. We did not receive this draft report in the timeline that you mentioned. We are currently reviewing this report, when the results are finalized I will let you know.

Question/Comment 20 (2023-09-05 email from Christina Holland)

I’ve attached some photos to show the volume. As you can see there are more pedestrians than one single crosswalk can contain. This is just one part of why a full 4 way intersection with crosswalks on both sides of the road is needed.

Response (2023-09-07 email sent by Mark Halpin)

The crosswalk for this intersection is located on the north leg of this intersection because it provides a direct connection to the walkway connected to the school entrance. The school does not have a walkway on the south side of their driveway and so we do not plan to install a pedestrian crossing on the south leg of this intersection. Based on the draft report, and reflected in the pictures you provided we do have larger groups of pedestrians that cross this street at the start and end of the school day. Our Operations Staff are coordinating to have this section of 240 Street between Lougheed Highway and 102 Avenue repaved this fall. This work will consist of grinding away the top layer of asphalt and replacing this with a new top layer of asphalt with revised pavement markings (road paint). We are currently working with our contractor to confirm when this project will be completed. This work is being coordinated with SD42 to minimize impacts. As part of this paving work, we will widen the pedestrian crosswalk width by approximately 1 additional metre to provide more space for pedestrians. In addition, we will add new bike markings across this intersection to improve the connection to cycling pathway on the east side of 240 Street, and improve cycling amenities located on the west side of this roadway by connecting (southbound) cyclists to the school entrance with a new bike lane location this is adjacent to the west curb and separated from the travel lane by a painted buffer and vehicle parking (as opposed to travelling adjacent to traffic as per the current design today).

Thank you,

Mark Halpin BA, PMP
Manager of Transportation”

Thank you again everyone for signing and sharing, keep it up!!! The more signatures we get the better our chances are for real change and safety for our children, other pedestrians, cyclists and motorists!!!
