Layan Nasir, the 21 year old Palestinian Birzeit University student charged with membership in a student organization banned by Israel, is scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday. It is unclear whether some or all of the other young women who are also being detained will also appear in court that day.
Her parents think that whatever "trial" she has will occur on that day, and they are frightened that she will be convicted and sentenced to an extended period behind bars.
That is not an unreasonable fear. Keep in mind that court proceedings are held in Hebrew, a language Layan does not speak. Her lawyer, whether court appointed or chosen by the family, will have had extremely limited access to speak with her and prepare a defense.
According to the human rights group Military Court Watch, 95% of cases that are brought into the military courts end in conviction. https://www.militarycourtwatch.org/page.php?id=a6r85VcpyUa4755A52Y2mp3c4v So chances are overwhelmingly against Layan being released without international pressure being brought to bear.
I am thankful to the more than 7,000 of you who have signed our petition calling on the Biden Administration and the leaders of both the Senate and House to intervene with the Israeli authorities on behalf of Layan and the other students in detention. But now her court date is looming and we have one last chance to get our family members, friends and colleagues to join our petition. Wont you please return to Facebook, to Twitter, to Instagram, to email or whatever platform you use, and give them another chance to show support for Layan and the other young women?
