The Issue

The current insurance landscape in the UK is riddled with discriminatory practices that unfairly target those living with chronic and pre-existing medical conditions. This systemic issue affects millions, leaving them either without coverage or saddled with exorbitant premiums. This petition seeks to prompt a crucial change in legislation that will ensure equitable treatment and protection for these vulnerable individuals.

According to the Office for National Statistics, roughly 15 million people in England have a long-term condition, equating to 30% of the population. This staggering number highlights the importance of addressing discriminatory insurance practices. Despite paying into the system, individuals with chronic illnesses often face higher insurance rates or outright denial, holding them financially hostage due to their health status.

Countries like Australia and the United States have enacted various laws and policies aimed at halting such discrimination in their insurance sectors. The UK must follow suit by implementing robust legislation that prohibits insurance companies from denying coverage or inflating premiums based solely on pre-existing or chronic conditions. Doing so would offer much-needed relief not only to the affected individuals but also to the National Health Service, which often bears the burden of caring for those who cannot afford insurance coverage.

The government must establish a regulatory body focused solely on oversight to ensure compliance with these proposed laws. Ensuring that insurance companies undergo an independent audit regularly can further eliminate biases in the underwriting process. Concrete changes that can be implemented include:

  • Mandating insurance companies to offer standard rates to individuals with pre-existing conditions,
  • Limiting the premium increase percentages
  • Requiring greater transparency in how premiums are determined.
  • Insurers cannot refuse to sell you a policy because of a pre-existing condition.
  • Insurers cannot charge you higher premiums because of your medical history.
  • Insurers Must cover treatment for pre-existing conditions from the day your policy starts.
  • Insurers cannot exclude coverage for a condition simply because it existed before you enrolled.
  • Insurers cannot cancel your insurance because you become ill.

It's time to take a stand against this unjust practice. We urge the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, the Financial Conduct Authority, and the Association of British Insurers to consider this legislation as an urgent priority. These changes can make the UK a fairer and more inclusive nation for all.

Take meaningful action now. Sign this petition to urge the UK government to update legislation and protect those with chronic and pre-existing conditions from insurance discrimination.
