Update the Veterans Property Tax Exclusion to Reflect Current Home Prices

The Issue

Having been implemented in 2008 the Veterans Property Tax Exclusion was designed to provide financial relief for disabled veterans, allowing them to own a home without the burden of excessive property taxes. However, with home prices skyrocketing in recent years - doubling in some cases - and an increased inflation rate, this exclusion has failed to keep pace. Currently, the maximum exclusion is $300k for 100% disabled veterans which is no longer reflective of today's housing market realities. In Minnesota alone, median home prices have risen by 8.9% over the past year alone (source: Zillow Home Value Index). Over the last 5 years the median sale price of homes in Minnesota have risen from $230,000 to $330,000 (source:Redfin median sale price). This means that many veterans are now unable to benefit from this provision as intended due to these escalating costs. We call on our lawmakers and relevant authorities to review and update the Veterans Property Tax Exclusion so it aligns with current home prices, ensuring that our deserving veterans can continue enjoying their homeownership rights without undue financial stress.  Not only does this problem effect Veterans looking to purchase a home, but also those that have been in a home for many years.  The state has increased the assessed value of these homes adding a new bill that was not expected to Veterans who may be on a set income.  Please sign this petition if you believe in fair treatment for our veterans.
