Update Miramar's Noise Ordinance to Protect Homes from Daytime Music Pollution
The Issue
To the Miramar City Commission and Mayor:
We, the residents, families, and homeowners of Miramar, Florida, are calling for an immediate legislative amendment to the city’s noise ordinance to protect our homes from chronic residential daytime noise pollution.
Our world has changed drastically in a very short period of time. Since the COVID-19 pandemic, our residential neighborhoods are no longer just places where people sleep at night. Today, our homes serve as classrooms, offices, and economic hubs. Thousands of Miramar residents now permanently work from home, and our children regularly study and attend online classes from their bedrooms.
If Miramar’s lifestyle has shifted so fundamentally, the city ordinance must change accordingly to support the very taxpayers who fund this community. Tax-paying residents who invest in their homes deserve a legal framework that actively protects their ability to live, work, and thrive without external disruption.
Because of this massive shift, daytime noise is no longer just a minor inconvenience—it is a direct assault on our livelihoods, our education, and our productivity.
Currently, our local rules make it incredibly difficult for code enforcement or law enforcement to stop neighbors from blasting amplified music and heavy bass during daytime hours. While residents have a right to reasonable property use, no citizen should be subjected to loud music that penetrates closed windows, rattles walls, and disrupts the ability to conduct a professional work call, study for an exam, or relax inside their own home.
When noise happens in a public space, citizens have the freedom to leave. But when noise invades a private residential home, there is nowhere to run for peace. Your home is your final refuge, and you have a fundamental right to quiet, comfort, and privacy.
We petition the Miramar City Commission to follow the successful frameworks of cities like Portland, Oregon, and Indianapolis, Indiana, by implementing a 24/7 "Plainly Audible" property line standard.
We demand an update to the Miramar Code of Ordinances stating that amplified music or sound from a residential property cannot be plainly audible across a property line at a distance of 25 feet at any hour of the day or night. This directly aligns our residential protections with existing Florida vehicle laws (Statute 316.3045), which already enforce a 25-foot rule on public roads.
Protect our homes, our mental health, our careers, and our property values. Please update Miramar’s noise laws to restore the peace our modern neighborhoods deserve.
