Update Horowhenua Council bee bylaw

Update Horowhenua Council bee bylaw
The issue
In Horowhenua, the bee bylaw hasn't been revised since 6 November 2014. This outdated regulation is becoming increasingly problematic, especially for local beekeepers like me, who have suffered substantial losses. Over the years, the fertile soils and ideal climate have turned Horowhenua into a hub for market gardening, heavily reliant on effective pollination. However, the current bylaw neglects the realities of modern farming needs and fails to protect local apiaries.
During the winter season, commercial beekeepers bring their hives to Levin for overwintering due to its favorable climate. Unfortunately, this influx of hives leads to intensified competition for the scarce bee food available, often resulting in the weakening, robbing, and eventual destruction of local apiaries. Over the years, my own collection of over 24 hives has been decimated by this ongoing issue, undermining both my livelihood and the critical pollination services necessary for thriving summer crops.
Bee keeping is not just a hobby, but a crucial contributor to the region's agricultural success. As commercial activities grow, our local regulations should adapt to ensure sustainability. We need an updated bee bylaw that reflects the current agricultural landscape and prioritizes the health and safety of local hives.
Horowhenua Council must immediately revise the bee bylaw to set clear limits on the number of overwintering commercial hives allowed in the area and enforce measures to safeguard local bees. This can be achieved by facilitating designated overwintering areas that do not conflict with local apiaries, providing education on sustainable bee-keeping practices, and encouraging collaboration between commercial and local beekeepers.
By supporting local beekeepers and updating this crucial policy, we can enhance pollination efficiency, safeguard environmental stability, and ensure that the agriculture industry of our region continues to flourish. Join me in urging the Horowhenua Council to take action now. Sign the petition to push for the changes needed to protect our bees and secure the future of our community's agriculture.
